NAPLES, Italy — Discovery of a suspicious object near a military housing area here sparked a brief security response before the item was cleared as a toy grenade.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents and Italian Carabinieri responded to the support site in Gricignano in the morning after the base received a call from someone who found the object, spokeswoman Lt. Liza Dougherty said.

The base created a perimeter around the object and briefly heightened security and tightened entry at both the Gricignano and Capodichino sites as agents examined the object, Dougherty said. Agents cleared the object within an hour.

“They were able to determine it was plastic, it was a toy,” she said.

She said it was likely left somewhere by a child and not intended as a hoax.
