Children of military families and military retirees can start applying Nov. 1 for $1,500 scholarships being given by the Defense Commissary Agency and Fisher House Foundations. The closing date for applying is Feb. 22.
Applicants are required to write an essay on why they admire a great past or present military leader.
Applications will be made available at commissaries worldwide, and students can also apply over the Internet at www.militaryscholar.org, a site that also provides more information on the scholarship.
David Ruderman, a spokesman for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe, said students who live in locations without a commissary can apply through the Internet, using the nearest commissary as their home site.
