A 21-year-old soldier assigned to the 502nd Engineer Company died Monday night from an apparent stab wound inflicted at his quarters, Army officials reported Tuesday.

German authorities took the man’s spouse into custody as part of the investigation, according to the V Corps public affairs office.

Officials had no comment on the incident beyond that, referring questions to German authorities.

German officials were not immediately available Tuesday for comment.

About 9 p.m. Monday, unit personnel, German police, U.S. military police and German medical emergency personnel responded to the scene at Pioneer Kaserne in Hanau, U.S. officials said.

Despite lifesaving steps being initiated, the soldier was pronounced dead at the scene, the Army reported.
