We asked readers share their strongest memories from the Vietnam War. They responded with scores of stories, photos and emotions still vivid after five decades. Stars and Stripes now presents those memories as part of our decadelong effort to remember and honor one of America's most painful chapters. As Vietnam at 50 continues, new submissions will continually be published throughout the year. Readers can submit their own memories for consideration here.
Please note that Stars and Stripes could not verify every account. Reader submissions are presented as first-person stories. Stories are ordered with the newest entries listed first.
EDITOR'S HIGHLIGHT | Story
I took a series of long-exposure 35mm Ektachrome images of our compound responding to the threat of a sniper on "our" mountain. ... On random nights a single Viet Cong would lean over a boulder and blow off a mag on full-auto from his AK-47. The rounds impacted on our corrugated metal roofs and blew through where off-duty men were sleeping.
