KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — More than 850 special-needs athletes will compete Saturday at the 11th annual Special Olympics at the Risner Fitness Complex.

Approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend the event, including 2,000 American volunteers and 400 local national interpreters.

The day will kick off with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will include track and field, tennis, basketball and floor hockey. An art exhibit showcasing the artwork of 700 special-needs artists will also be open at the Risner Gym throughout the day.

The event is free and open to all SOFA-status personnel.

Parking is available at the Rocker NCO Club and the Officers Club where shuttles will begin transporting people to the event at 6:15 a.m.
