Spangler, former editor of Stars and Stripes, dies of leukemia

Retired U.S. Army Col. Billy Spangler, commander and editor-in-chief of the European edition of Stars and Stripes from 1978 to 1981, died of leukemia Nov. 19 at his home in Boerne, Texas.
At the time, the European edition was the newspaper for service personnel, DOD civilians and family members stationed in Europe and the Middle East.
His last assignment was Commandant, Defense Information School, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. He retired in 1983.
Spangler was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
