A Spangdahlem, Germany-based U.S. airman was killed early Sunday morning in a two-car accident less than three miles from the air base, an Air Force spokesman said.

Senior Airman Jason Bechel, an aircraft maintainer with the 52nd Equipment Maintenance Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base, died in the accident, said Capt. Tom Crosson, a spokesman for the air base.

Bechel was a passenger in a car traveling on L39 between the villages of Speicher and Herforst around 5 a.m. when the accident occurred, Crosson said. The villages are only a few miles from the U.S. base.

The driver of the vehicle Bechel was riding in was injured in the crash, Crosson said. A German in the other vehicle also was injured.

German police are investigating the accident.
