WIESBADEN, Germany — Sony Corp. announced it’s recalling 1.6 million 40-inch LCD televisions, some of which were sold worldwide in Army and Air Force Exchange Service stores and on its online site.

Sony indicated there have been 11 reports of a defective component triggering overheating and smoking. The Associated Press reports the defective part is an inverter transformer used for LCD backlights.

AAFES says they sold three models involved in the recall: KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000 and KDL40XBR4.

U.S. customers who purchased one of the recalled models from AAFES should go to the website or call (888) 868-7389 to schedule a free evaluation or repair. Folks overseas who purchased one of the recalled models from AAFES need to send an email to with their name, address, phone number and TV model number. The subject line of the email should say “Sony LCD TV Recall.”
