Soldiers based in Germany, Italy, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington are on their way home after a yearlong tour ensuring troops in Afghanistan got their mail.
Members of the 510th Personnel Services Battalion had been responsible for personnel services and mail delivery throughout the country, and are being replaced by National Guard and Reserve soldiers of the 50th Personnel Services Battalion. A transfer of authority ceremony was held last week at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
During their tour, members of the 510th operated from four different countries to support the units deployed in Afghanistan.
The unit averaged 15,000 personnel transactions a month, manifesting nearly 100,000 servicemembers and civilians on flights and moving an average of 200,000 pounds of mail a month to the various bases.
