A 1st Infantry Division soldier suspected in the rape and attempted murder of a 20-year-old woman remains in custody at the Army detention facility in Mannheim, Germany, as German authorities continue to investigate the case.

The soldier is being held at the detention facility at the request of German authorities, according to Maj. Bill Coppernoll, 1st Infantry Division spokesman.

German authorities have jurisdiction in the investigation with the cooperation of U.S. Army law enforcement agencies, he said.

Investigators have not released the soldier’s name or unit.

The incident allegedly took place over the Veterans Day holiday weekend in November near a nightclub in Hirschaid, about 10 miles south of Bamberg.

The woman was found unconscious Nov. 14 in a commuter parking lot and was still unconscious Nov. 18 when Bamberg police held a news conference about the case.

Information on the woman’s current condition was unavailable.
