Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to troops downrange, recently sent its 300,000th package — and included a small but significant surprise.

The package contained the key to a new 2008 Jeep Liberty. And the lucky soldier who opened the package was Spc. Michael Gallagher, of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, currently stationed at Forward Operating Base Warhorse in Iraq.

“When my commander ordered me to show up to this ceremony, I thought it was just another care package and they were making a big deal about it because it was the 300,000th one,” Gallagher was quoted as saying in a news release. “When I opened up the envelope, (with the keys inside) it completely blew my mind.”

The package also had other gifts, letters from local schools and four cigars from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Jeep was donated by the Chrysler Jeep company.

Carolyn Blashek, the president and founder of Operation Gratitude, made the trip to FOB Warhorse to award the package.
