Soldier killed in Afghanistan was based at Caserma Ederle
VICENZA, Italy — The soldier killed by a roadside bomb Tuesday in Afghanistan was based at Caserma Ederle, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday.
Spc. Matthew P. Steyart, 21, of Mount Shasta, Calif., died near Shah Wali Kot when a bomb blew up near his Humvee. The Department of Defense released his identity Wednesday.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the base chapel.
Steyart was a member of the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment and the seventh Red Devil to die this year in Afghanistan. Seventeen soldiers stationed in Vicenza have died since the Southern European Task Force (Airborne) took over the operational mission in Afghanistan in March.
