CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A memorial service has been scheduled for the Kadena Middle School teacher who died Monday, according to Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Okinawa.

The service for Jim Weaver, 56, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Okinawa City, DODDS-Okinawa spokeswoman Laura Stoller said Thursday.

Military and local officials are investigating the “circumstances surrounding Mr. Weaver’s death,” Jonathan Beyer, with DODDS-Pacific, said in an e-mail response.

Beyer referred all other queries regarding the death to the Army Criminal Investigation Command, Air Force Office of Special Investigations and local authorities.

Weaver taught at Kadena Middle School since it opened in 1990 and at Kadena High School for two years before that, according to a release.

“He was a consummate science teacher,” Kadena Middle School principal Linda Connolly said in the release.

“His focus was always on his students, and he encouraged them to reach for the stars,” she said, adding that he “will be genuinely missed by students, colleagues and parents.”

Weaver is survived by a wife and son here and a 31-year-old daughter from a previous marriage in the States.
