Mobile Security Squadron 7 Detachment 71 was expected Friday to return to Guam after completing a six-month deployment, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas said in a news release.
The 60-person detachment was assigned to protect two Iraqi oil terminals. Personnel also responded to extinguish a fire at the Khawr al Amaya Oil Terminal in May.
In addition, personnel trained Iraqi marines to assume the mission of protecting the Iraqi facilities and addressed numerous safety issues at the terminals, the Navy said. They also built a shooting range for coalition forces to use.
Developed in the wake of the USS Cole bombing in Yemen and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, MSS-7 provides point defense force protection to high-value assets in the 5th, 6th, and 7th fleet area of responsibility.
