U.S. Navy Seabees sent to Pakistan from Okinawa are participating in an “Adopt a Village” program to help people get back on their feet after the destructive Oct. 8 earthquake.

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 is taking part in the program by adopting the village of Miani Bandi, Pakistan, adjacent to the Muzaffarabad airport, according to a U.S. Central Command news release.

The sailors were originally deployed from their home base of Gulfport, Miss., to Okinawa, and a contingency was sent to Pakistan in late October.

In Pakistan, they are building durable shelters for the upcoming winter, according to the news release. The Seabees, along with the Pakistan military and local homeowners, will reconstruct about 75 homes, a school and sanitation facilities.
