SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Pupils at Jack N. Darby Elementary School raised $1,080 last week for the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina, a school spokeswoman said Friday.

Fifth-grade teacher Kristina Crane and the student council group helped organize a fundraiser among pupils and teachers. Money was collected in jars and via a hat rally, in which pupils paid $1 to wear a hat all day Friday.

“I expect students will see they can make a difference in the world and I hope they carry that with them as they grow older,” said Crane, who organized the fundraising efforts.
