Sasebo sailor sentenced in shoplifting case
SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — A sailor attached to the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center here received a suspended sentence Thursday for shoplifting, said base spokesman Charles T. Howard.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Naran Bartley, 25, was sentenced to 10 months in prison at forced labor, suspended for three years. He received the sentence during his first appearance in Nagasaki District Court in Sasebo following a Feb. 10 indictment, Howard said.
Bartley was charged with shoplifting nine bags of items worth 2,800 yen (about $23.80) from a local supermarket on Jan. 14.
Japanese police did not detain Bartley while he awaited trial and sentencing.
