SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — A USS Essex sailor remains in local police custody after his arrest Sunday for the alleged assault of a local man during a beach concert Saturday night.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Cori Michael Ansel, 26, was arrested about 4 a.m. Sunday, a Nagasaki prefecture police official said Monday.
“Japanese authorities have jurisdiction and are conducting an investigation,” said Amphibious Group One spokesman Lt. Edward Sisk.
The police official said Ansel was upset after the Japanese man patted him on the back. Ansel allegedly spun around, knocked the man off his feet and punched him about the forehead.
Paramedics responded to the incident and called police, the police official added. Ansel was later identified in the audience.
The Japanese man suffered bruises on his forehead, the police official said.
The Nagasaki District Prosecutor’s Office, Sasebo Branch, had not filed charges Monday afternoon.
“We are cooperating closely with Japanese police to assist in resolving this matter appropriately,” Sisk said. “We take such incidents very seriously,” he added.
