SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — During the holiday season, small groups, retail outlets and professional offices often hold some sort of party or gathering, usually casual, to celebrate and let their hair down a bit.

But those throwing the annual Sasebo Community Christmas Holiday Party invited everyone associated with the base in southern Japan; that’s about 5,000 potential guests.

Fortunately for Chuck Yost, the HVC’s new executive chef, only a few hundred usually attend. The $20 tickets include a dinner buffet Yost is preparing “with all the trimmings,” Brendi Santiago, HVC catering manager, said Wednesday evening, “including roast turkey, baked ham, whipped potatoes, rice pilaf, yams with marshmallows and raisins, and for dessert, Christmas cake.”

Door prizes worth a total of $1,000 go to lucky attendees, their names plucked from Santa’s fuzzy red cap and announced every 30 minutes throughout the evening. “Also,” Santiago said, “there’ll be a color guard at the party, music supplied [by] our regular DJ and, of course, plenty of dancing.”

The annual party, sponsored by Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo, or CFAS, the installation’s shore command, is for the entire base community, said Command Master Chief Petty Officer William Lowman.

The party gives the command a chance “to share the holiday spirit and show our appreciation to everyone in Sasebo,” he added.

“We also do this because there are some tenant commands that are too small or don’t have the assets to have their own holiday party, and this way everyone gets to take part,” Lowman said.

Chief Petty Officer Carmen Viduya, a Navy career counselor in Sasebo and the party organizer, echoed the command master chief: “This gives you a chance to come out and enjoy the holidays with your friends and family.”

Ticket sales took place only in advance, Viduya explained, adding that she encouraged those wanting to attend to buy them early.

“And each tenant command and CFAS department has a representative with a limited number of tickets they can sell,” she noted.
