SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — The Ernest J. King High School Navy Junior ROTC unit plans to march Saturday afternoon in a base parade it organized.

The cadets will be joined by more than 20 commands and groups including at least four Sasebo Fire Department vehicles; base Security Division and K-9 detachment entries; a float built and operated by the Seabee detachment; marching units and groups represented by automobiles displaying various signs and holiday decorations.

Santa Claus also is expected to make an appearance in a fire department vehicle during the 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. parade.

“We are really excited about it and have had a great response from the commands and organizations we invited on the base,” Junior ROTC instructor Ret. Chief Petty Officer Henry Barr said Monday. “When I realized we had more than 20, I thought maybe it was time for us to not push quite as hard for more.”

Participants will gather in the large parking area behind Housing Welcome Center building on Oregon Drive, Barr said.

The parade begins at the intersection of Oregon and California drives between Galaxies Club and Navy Exchange Auto Port.

The course takes participants along California past Fleet Landing and NEX Mini-Mart. The route continues to the front of the Community and Education Center, and the parade ends at the flagpoles in front of base headquarters, the Tominaga building.

Barr said cadets from the second-year ROTC program here will march in formation, performing limited rifle drill demonstrations.

The rain date is Sunday, same time, same place, Barr said.
