SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — A Ship Repair Facility contract employee arrested in October on charges of drug possession at a local hotel was sentenced Wednesday in Nagasaki District Court to hard labor in prison for a year and a half. The sentence was suspended for three years, court officials said.

Gustavo Rodriguez, 25, charged with violations of Japan’s cannabis control law and customs law, asked a stateside acquaintance to mail 18 grams (0.64 ounces) of marijuana via international air freight, officials said. He received the drugs at the hotel on Oct. 6.

Rodriguez started work at Sasebo Naval Base in August, base officials said following the arrest.
