More than 300 U.S. sailors on the guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan are deployed to the eastern Atlantic Ocean to take part in FRUKUS ’05, a multilateral exercise with France, Russia and the United Kingdom, according to a Navy 6th Fleet news release.

The five-day, annual exercise ends Saturday, and serves to foster “an environment of cooperation suitable to meet future operational requirements and contingencies … [and] provides focus on the ability of forces to support NATO peacekeeping, maritime interdiction, and proliferation security initiatives,” the release stated.

Ships participating with the Mahan, based in Norfolk, Va., include the French Navy destroyer De Grasse, the Russian Federation Navy destroyer Admiral Levchenko and the Royal Navy frigate Montrose. Nearly 1,100 sailors from the four countries are involved.

The exercise is hosted on a rotational basis, with France taking the lead this year.
