A USS Kitty Hawk sailor was sentenced to 12 months confinement for larceny during a court-martial Monday, Navy officials said.

Seaman Apprentice Michael Joseph Pyper Jr., 21, also was reduced in grade to E-1, sentenced to forfeit $823 per month in pay for one year and given a bad conduct discharge, said Chief Petty Officer Maria Mercado, a Commander Naval Forces Japan spokeswoman.

Japanese police arrested Pyper on May 10, accusing him of attempted larceny, breaking into a Yokosuka city elementary school and rummaging through a teachers locker room.

Japanese authorities dropped the case and released him to the Navy on May 18, after Pyper repaid the 170,000 yen (about $1,575) he took from a teacher’s locker at the elementary school, officials said.
