Sailor killed in Guam traffic accident named
Navy officials on Guam on Monday identified the sailor killed in a traffic accident near Polaris Point early Friday.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Thomas Carta, stationed on the Guam-based USS City of Corpus Christi, died following the 1 a.m. accident Friday, a Navy spokesman said.
Guam police reported Carta’s age as 20, but Navy officials could not confirm that Monday.
The accident occurred along Marine Corps Drive near Apra Harbor, about 100 yards from the turnoff to the submarine pier, the spokesman said. Carta was off duty at the time and alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he said.
Another sailor from the sub was injured in the crash but was treated and released. His name was not available Monday. No other vehicles or people were involved.
The accident’s cause is still being investigated. A memorial for Carta will be held in the next week, although an exact time has not been set.
The Pacific Daily News reported the accident was the island’s first traffic casualty this year.
