A sailor from Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, was found dead Saturday morning at the New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo, the Navy said.

A male petty officer second class assigned to Yokosuka’s Meteorology and Oceanography Command was discovered in his room shortly before lunchtime following a Christmas party at the hotel the previous night, according to Jon Nylander, Commander, Naval Forces Japan spokesman.

His name is being withheld pending notification of family members.

“He was found by someone from the meteorological command this morning or right near lunch,” he said.

Nylander had no other details on the circumstances surrounding the death but said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is treating it as an apparent suicide.

New Sanno security officials contacted Saturday afternoon declined to comment, deferring all queries to CNFJ.
