OKINAWA CITY — A 21-year-old sailor was in Okinawa police custody Monday after he allegedly threw a chair at a guitarist in a Gate Two Street bar on Saturday.

The sailor, assigned to the Fourth Naval Construction Battalion at Camp Shields, allegedly hurled the chair at the 46-year-old musician in Jack Nastys, a popular rock club on the entertainment strip adjacent to Kadena Air Base.

According to a police spokesman, the incident occurred about 11:50 p.m. and the guitarist was able to dodge the chair, but fell to the floor. The bass guitar he was playing and an acoustic guitar that was nearby were damaged, the police spokesman said. The instruments are valued at 420,000 yen, or about $3,820.

According to a police report, the sailor was heavily intoxicated and did not remember the incident. Police referred the charges of assault and vandalism to the Naha District Public Prosecutor’s on Sunday.
