S. Korea bases plan 9/11 services
A series of memorial services marking the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will be held this week at bases throughout South Korea, with some services also honoring servicemembers killed in conflicts during the same time period.
Yongsan Garrison’s planned 30-minute memorial, for instance, will have five chaplains honoring five different groups, from emergency workers killed in the World Trade Center to soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“It’s not only honoring those who lost their lives on 9/11 but also about servicemembers lost in the ensuing war on terror,” said Col. Samuel Boone, 8th Army chaplain at Yongsan Garrison.
The multifaith Yongsan ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday at the South Post Chapel, Boone said.
At Camp Red Cloud, chaplains, the base fire department and the 2nd Infantry Band will participate in a remembrance service scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Warrior Chapel.
The Area III memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Friday at the Camp Long chapel in Wonju. Besides Camp Long personnel, others scheduled to take part are from Camp Eagle and the Republic of Korea Army.
The relatively small military community at Chinhae Naval Base in South Korea will hold a combined Sept. 11 memorial service and POW-MIA Day observance. The service is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the base chapel.
Other installations will hold ceremonies Saturday, including Camp Walker, where a remembrance ceremony is set for 10 a.m. in front of the 9/11 Monument at the fire station in Taegu.
At Osan Air Base, officials have decided to mark the anniversary in a more upbeat manner. A “United We Stand Golf Tournament” will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the base golf course and a 5K walk/run begins at 8 a.m. from the base fitness center.
Sunday, the 10:30 a.m. Protestant worship service at Camp Walker Chapel will be a special 9/11 Service of Remembrance. Speaking will be Maj. Gen. David Hicks, the U.S. Army chief of chaplains.
Kunsan Air Base does not have an event scheduled, officials said.
