A Naval Station Rota, Spain, sailor has been selected as the Navy Region Europe Sailor of the Year, Navy officials said.

Petty Officer 1st Class John Hughes, the only full-time Navy career counselor stationed in Rota, got the regional leaders’ top nod. He has affected the career development and transition of more than 1,500 sailors, airmen and soldiers.

Hughes also has taken on the challenge of being a full-time student and has completed 27 credit hours of college courses this year.

Hughes now will compete against sailors from 17 Navy regions worldwide in the Navy Installations Command competition. From those 17, five finalists will compete, in person, in Washington, D.C., in the spring.
