Rota sailor guilty of assaulting woman
A Naval Station Rota-based sailor was found guilty of indecent assault and attempted indecent assault during a general court-martial held last week at the Navy base in Spain.
On Thursday evening, a five-member jury found Petty Officer 3rd Class Julio Juarez, a hospital corpsman, guilty on the two charges and sentenced him to reduction in rate to E-3 and forfeiture of $700 per month for two months. He was also restricted to the base for 60 days, according to an e-mail from Lt. Mike Morley, the base spokesman.
Juarez had faced a maximum of 10 years’ confinement.
The charges against Juarez stemmed from an incident that took place on June 4 at an off-base residence near El Puerto de Santa Maria, involving a woman, Morley said on Friday.
The woman had made a complaint in the days following the incident, and Naval Criminal Investigative Services investigated the charges.
