YOKOHAMA, Japan — A major road leading to the Navy’s Negishi housing area will be closed through June 16 after a landslide, Japanese officials said Thursday.

Traffic has been entirely blocked off between Shirotakifudoson-mae, which lies just off Route 16, and Negishi Asahidai, at the top of a hill leading to the Negishi base’s main gate. The main gate remains open and can be reached after passage through the base’s other regularly open gates, or by using an alternate traffic route.

The landslide occurred after heavy rains Saturday, according to a spokesman at Yokohama’s Yamate police station.

Although no major damage was reported, work crews are still removing dirt and fixing a protective fence.

The crew is expected to finish Sunday and the roadblock should be removed by Monday morning, said Akihito Sakurai, vice director of contractor Naka Doboku.
