Retired S. Korean general to be honored
SEOUL — South Korea’s first four-star army general will be honored at a special event Friday night. Retired Gen. Paik Sun-yup, 88, will receive the Dr. Horace Grant Underwood for Lifetime Achievement award during the 2009 United States Forces Korea Good Neighbor awards ceremony at the Dragon Hill Lodge at Yongsan Garrison.
The event, starting at 5:30 p.m., also will recognize 12 Korean citizens, two Korean organizations, five U.S. servicemembers and one U.S. military unit for contributions to promote friendship and strengthen the alliance.
Other awards to be presented:
nGood Neighbor Organization Award — Gangnam District and the New Seoul Chapter of People-to-People International.
nAmbassadors for the Alliance Good Neighbor Unit Award — United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area.
nGood Neighbor Individual Award — Chey Chul-won, Cho Hu-nam, Hwang Jeong-yong, Dr. Kim Choon-won, Lee Hyun-ok, Lee Hyun-si, Lee Ki-dong, Son Jeong-kil, Song Myeong-ho, Song Suk-keun and Col. Yun Won-hui.
nAmbassadors for the Alliance Good Neighbor Service Member Award — Cpl. Richard Anderson, Capt. James Austin, Staff Sgt. Mitchell W. Calhoun, Spc. Rodenay Joseph, Capt. Trevor Parks.
Top admiral in Korea headed to carrier group commandRear Adm. Thomas S. Rowden will be assigned as the commander of Carrier Strike Group Seven in San Diego, the Defense Department announced. The one-star admiral currently is Navy Region Korea commander; U.S. Naval Forces Korea commander; and commander of Naval Component, U.S. Forces Korea, U.N. Command, Korea.
