CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Goodbye 3rd Transport Support Battalion, hello Combat Logistics Regiment 3.

The last transportation support battalion in the Marine Corps has been restructured and redesignated as part of the overall transformation of the old fleet service support groups into Marine logistics groups.

The restructuring took place earlier this month in a ceremony on Camp Foster’s parade field. According to a press release, the overall goal behind the designation change is to establish a standard, consistent force structure for logistics groups throughout the Marine Corps.

The reorganization of the Marine logistics groups came about after weaknesses were identified in how the units provided support to Marine units during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991 and resurfaced during Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the release.
