The United States and South Korea have developed a plan to cope with possible regime change and emergencies in North Korea, according to South Korean media reports citing an unnamed source in Seoul.
“Operational Plan 5029” reportedly covers responses to such emergencies in North Korea as a civil war, a large number of refugees, exportation of weapons of mass destruction and natural disasters, according to media reports.
Under the plan, the United States would take the lead in eliminating North Korea’s WMDs, including nuclear weapons, while South Korean forces would play a leading role dealing with other contingencies, according to the reports.
U.S. Forces Korea officials and the South Korean Ministry of Defense declined to comment Monday on the reports.
