RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — Chief Master Sgt. Zefrem Smith was pulled from his position in November as the 86th Airlift Wing’s senior enlisted leader by wing commander Brig. Gen. Charles K. Hyde, “citing a loss of confidence in his ability to perform his duties,” a Ramstein base official acknowledged Wednesday.

Smith was removed from his job “for cause,” said base spokeswoman Maj. Elizabeth Aptekar.

Queried Wednesday, Aptekar said the wing neglected to announce the move earlier, and said she could not provide more details at this time as to why Smith was removed due to an internal investigation, directed by the wing commander.

Smith has been reassigned to other duties at Ramstein, Aptekar said. He had been command chief for the wing since July 2011.

The wing’s new command chief, Chief Master Sgt. James A. Morris, arrived at Ramstein on Jan. 15. His last assignment was with the 19th Airlift Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., where he also served as command chief master sergeant.
