KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Sometimes parents just need a break.

The Family Members Programs Flight on Kadena Air Base has two programs to provide that much-needed timeout.

The programs — Give Parents a Break and Parents Night Out — provide respites from the wear and tear that caring for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years can sometimes cause.

The programs are scheduled on the second Saturday of each month, when the Shima No Ko Child Day Care Center offers five hours of child care at little or no cost. Give Parents a Break offers Air Force members free child care. Parents Night Out offers child care to all military families for a nominal fee.

The Give Parents a Break program is for Air Force members in need of a break due to deployments or other hardships, said Jenny Dumpert, a resources specialist for the Flight.

“This is provided at no fee through the Air Force Aid Society,” she said.

Parents must obtain referral vouchers from the Air Force Family Center, Building 99, or by calling 634-3366. The program is for Air Force members who are deploying for 30 days or more.

“All other parents can obtain the same relief through Parents Night Out,” Dumpert said. “It’s the same child care available for a small fee and is open to all parents, not just Air Force members.”

Child care for the Parents Night Out program is $4 per hour per child.

Dumpert said referral vouchers aren’t required for the Parents Night Out program.

While parents take advantage of being childless for the night or afternoon, the staff at Shima No Ko plan provides light dinners, snacks and activities for the children, she said.

Parents should sign up by noon the previous Wednesday at the center, near Kadena’s Gate 3. First-timers will need to fill out some paperwork and must have a copy of their child’s shot records.
