An e-mail purportedly sent from a Stars and Stripes e-mail address and containing fake news stories and a possible virus was sent out earlier this week by an unknown person or persons using a “spoofed” Stripes account.

The e-mail, with the subject line “FY07 Proposed 2.2 Increase Military Pay Chart,” contains two attachments: a falsified story attributed to a nonexistent Stripes reporter and an Excel spreadsheet document that possibly contains a virus.

Thousands of e-mail addresses in Iraq and other overseas locations have apparently received the message, which was sent from a server not under Stripes’ control. The attachments contained inaccurate information and were not written by any Stars and Stripes staff members.

Stars and Stripes computer technicians have been working on the problem and are tracing the origin of the message.
