Okinawa police are investigating a traffic accident involving a 25-year-old airman assigned to Kadena Air Base.

According to a police report, the airman was traveling north on a farm road in Yomitan when she struck a pedestrian at 11:08 p.m. Sunday.

The pedestrian, Tsutomu Uechi, 48, of Yomitan, was pronounced dead about 1:08 a.m. Tuesday from massive brain injuries, according to a spokesman for the Okinawa prefectural police in the town of Kadena.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death, he said.

Police said Monday alcohol was not involved and the accident occurred on an unlit stretch of road. No arrest has been made, a police spokesman said.
