Drivers in Germany using Army and Air Force Exchange Service fuel ration cards will not be able to gas up on or off base during an eight-hour period beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, when the system will be taken offline for maintenance and system upgrades, according to the exchange.

Motorists who haven’t yet switched from the old-style paper ration coupons to the new ration card will not be affected by the outage.

Those with the new fuel cards, though, "will not be able to purchase fuel or go online and manage their account" from 10 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Col. David Konop, an AAFES spokesman. "It’s something that has to happen," Konop said, adding that the exchange chose to take the system down when it did in an effort to lessen the outage’s impact on customers.

AAFES doesn’t anticipate such interruptions will be a regular occurrence, and there is no worry that the system will lose customer data, Konop said.
