The air assault operation dubbed “Swarmer” moved into its sixth day Tuesday, with military officials reporting a pair of weapons caches seized in the past 24 hours.
The operation, which targets suspected insurgent strongholds in an area near Samarra, includes troops from the 1st Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division and the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. Officials had billed the operation as the largest air assault since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
“Units continue to sweep across the area in an effort to deny terrorist forces the freedom of movement and reduce their ability to operate in the province,” a U.S. military press release read.
