An Air Force officer was killed and two airmen injured Monday after a vehicle crash during a military exercise in Egypt, officials said Tuesday.
Around 16,000 troops from 14 countries are taking part in Exercise Bright Star 05, a three-week-long training series that runs through Oct. 3. Around 8,000 U.S. servicemembers are participating.
Officials gave few details about the crash, other than saying that it occurred on the El Alamein Highway between Cairo and Alexandria.
“The cause of the accident is under investigation and the names of the personnel are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin,” read a U.S. Central Command release.
The Bright Star exercise is normally held every two years, but was canceled in 2003 because of the Iraq invasion. All branches of the military services typically participate in the training, which is designed to share tactics and increase security cooperation, officials said.
