Okinawa Marine arrested in assault
KIN, Okinawa — Okinawa police said they arrested a 22-year-old Marine assigned to Camp Hansen after he punched a Japanese woman in the face early Sunday while drinking at a local bar.
Cpl. Timothy B. Gibbs, assigned to the 3rd Marine Division, hit the 36-year-old woman twice at 3 a.m. Sunday.
This was after she ordered him to leave the woman’s restroom of a popular bar just outside Hansen’s main gate, an Ishikawa police station spokesman said.
Gibbs entered the restroom with a female friend, the spokesman said.
The woman reported the incident to police and then followed Gibbs when he left the bar, pointing him out on the street when police arrived at 3:15 a.m., the police spokesman said.
Gibbs is being held at the Ishikawa station on a charge of suspicion of committing an assault.
Gibbs denied hitting the woman, who was treated for facial bruises, the police spokesman said.
The charge was sent to the Naha District Court Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.
