Okinawa cops holding Marine after alleged car break-in
GINOWAN, Okinawa — A 21-year-old Marine was in Okinawa police custody Monday after he allegedly broke into a car parked at the Laguna Garden Hotel in Ginowan on Saturday night, according to Okinawa police.
According to the police report, a hotel security guard spotted the Marine, identified as Cpl. Jeremy Dwayne Muti, rummaging inside a car about 8:30 p.m. and called police.
A spokesman for Okinawa prefectural police in Ginowan said Muti was apprehended inside the car at the scene.
According to the police report, the Marine denied he was attempting to steal anything and said he was just attempting to get warm.
The Marine had been drinking; however, his level of intoxication was below the legal limit, the police spokesman said.
Police forwarded a charge of attempted theft to the Naha Public Prosecutor’s Office at 2 p.m. Monday.
Muti remained under police custody at the Ginowan City police station.
