Officials name victim of Kitty Hawk accident
YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Officials on Friday released the name of the sailor who lost his lower right leg in a Nov. 2 accident aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.
Airman Manuel Delrio from Van Nuys, Calif., had his leg pinned under the wheels of an F/A-18 Hornet on the flight deck while the aircraft carrier was operating in the western Pacific.
Delrio was rushed to the shipboard medical facility, where a surgeon amputated his right leg below the knee. Delrio later was evacuated by helicopter to a U.S. naval medical facility in Okinawa.
Strike Fighter Squadron 192 has convened an aviation ground mishap board to look into the accident, a spokesman has said. A safety investigation report is expected with 30 days.
