An official with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service has clarified information on the TSP catch-up contributions issue.

Stars and Stripes reported Wednesday that even though deductions would not happen until September, those eligible to participate could sign up now at their personnel offices. But readers wrote to Stripes to say they had had problems getting paperwork completed.

Asked about the problems, DFAS spokesman Roger Still said “DOD civilian personnel offices are putting in place the capability to process and submit these documents to DFAS.”

Still said DFAS will still begin deductions in September, but personnel offices are still getting “up to speed” on the program.

He added that civilian employees will be able to designate higher deductions between September and December to compensate for any delay in the initiation of the program.
