Army officials on Monday offered no new details regarding the deaths of two Germany-based soldiers over the weekend, citing ongoing investigations and the need to notify next of kin.

While the names of the 1st Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division soldiers were not released, German police said they suspect suicide in the death of the 1st AD soldier, who was found about 60 miles northeast of Hanau. Carsten Lippel, a spokesman for the Ost Hessen German police, said Monday that the 1st AD soldier apparently hanged himself in a forest near the town of Lauterbach. American and German authorities are investigating the case.

The soldier had been missing since Thursday, Lippel said, and was based near Hanau.

The second soldier, from the 1st ID, was taken to Würzburg Army Hospital on Saturday morning and was experiencing pain and weakness, said Maj. Bill Coppernoll, 1st ID spokesman.

The soldier died about two hours later, and the military is investigating the incident, Coppernoll said, adding that an autopsy was being performed Monday.
