MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — A Marine involved in a car accident last weekend that killed a Japanese bicyclist faced no charges or arrest as of Tuesday afternoon, according to local Japanese police.

But police said they will continue to investigate the accident and question Sgt. Frank A. Barbara, 26, of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni.

Barbara was driving in Hatsukaichi early Sunday morning when he hit the bicycle ridden by 78-year-old Yuzo Motoyasu, according to a Hatsukaichi police spokesman. Hatsukaichi is about 15 miles northeast of Iwakuni.

Motoyasu died immediately from the impact, the spokesman said.

The police continue to look for a second driver whose car was directly behind Barbara’s vehicle, the spokesman said. There is a possibility that car also hit Motoyasu, police said.

No arrests have been made in the case.

On Sunday, Marine officials visited with Motoyasu’s family to offer condolences.

On Tuesday, a base spokeswoman said Marine officials are continuing to cooperate with the investigation.
