Lt. Gen. Robert Bishop Jr., a command pilot with more than 5,300 flight hours, took over Wednesday as U.S. Air Forces in Europe vice commander.

He will oversee offensive and defensive air and space operations for the U.S. European Command for the Air Force and will be responsible for supporting Air Force units spread throughout Europe and Russia in addition to regions in Africa and the Middle East.

Bishop, who previously served as deputy chief of staff for Air and Space Operations at U.S. Air Force headquarters at the Pentagon in Washington, replaces Lt. Gen. Arthur Lichte.

Lichte departed Ramstein Air Base on June 30 to become assistant vice chief of staff at U.S. Air Force headquarters.
