Rear Adm. Carl V. Mauney was recently named the new commander of the Naples, Italy-based Submarine Group Eight.
He will take over for Rear Adm. Paul S. Stanley, who will become director of Warfare Programs and Readiness for U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.
The change of command, which will be held in Naples, is expected to take place some time in November.
Mauney is currently director of the Strategy and Policy Division at the office of the chief of naval operations at the Pentagon.
In addition to serving as head of the submarine group, Mauney will control operations and plans for the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and NATO’s Allied Submarines, Mediterranean.
Stanley has twice served as the submarine group’s commander, once for four months as interim commander in early 2002 and again in July 2003. He will also receive his second star during a promotion ceremony around Nov. 1.
