YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — The 5th Air Force’s new vice commander familiarized himself with the U.S. military’s Far East mission and assets during an immersion tour of his new air base in western Tokyo.

Last week, Brig. Gen. Michael Winkler visited several Yokota facilities, including the air traffic control tower, and inspected life-raft deployment and mechanized-material handling systems.

Winkler, an F-15 Eagle command pilot who previously led the 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, arrived at Yokota on the Fourth of July.

Yokota is home to U.S. Forces Japan, the 5th Air Force and the 374th Airlift Wing.
