NAPLES, Italy — A Naval Criminal Investigative Service employee is recovering after being run over by a car in downtown Naples last month.
NCIS spokesman Ed Buice said the agency is working with Italian investigators to figure out what led to the incident, which severely injured the man. Buice did not identify the employee but said he wasn’t an agent.
Local newspaper Il Mattino reported that a 20-year-old driver ran over the man, identified as a 35-year-old from Georgia, on Via Riviera in the Chiaia neighborhood of downtown Naples around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 16. Witnesses told police the man had been in a fight with a cab driver and was lying on the ground when he was struck by the car. The man had been punching and kicking vehicles along the street before the fight, other witnesses told police.
He was taken to the local Loreto Mare hospital, where he had emergency surgery and was placed in intensive care, according to the newspaper. It wasn’t immediately clear if the man was still in the Italian hospital or if he has returned to the U.S.
Buice said the account mentioned in the newspaper was “one version of events” but didn’t provide a different account.
